“I understand that a career in journalism is risky.”

Information

I have wanted to be a journalist since I was in Grade 9 (15 yo). After I graduated from high school, I studied for a one-year diploma at a media school. I want to give the people the right information – this is my first reason for choosing to be a Journalist as I believe giving people access to the right information means helping them. The second reason is I enjoy traveling and observing different and diverse places.

The first article I wrote was about the difficult access to the international market for Burmese films with one of my team members. As that was our very first article, we were so excited and tried our best. It was nerve-wracking to interview people from the movie industry.

My favorite articles are the ones I wrote after the coup. I reported about people protesting to get their rights back and people who have been struggling to make ends meet due to rising commodity prices, etc. I also enjoy writing articles reflecting the cultural and social life of people in Myanmar.

When I was writing my first article, it was a little difficult as I got very excited during the interviews. But now I write as calmly as I can. The only hard time for me during the writing process is when there are so many quotes and I have to choose the best ones.

I understand that a career in Journalism is risky, but I chose it because it is my passion. Because I am a journalist, I have made so many acquaintances. I would travel to different places and write about issues happening there to present it to the people. I am really happy working as a journalist though it’s tiring at times.

The only equipment I have to work with is my phone. I write, take news pictures and edit them on my phone. I am trying to buy a camera and a laptop. I am still working towards a professional level and I am learning as I go. My professional goal is to go to many places, film, take pictures and write about what’s happening there. I also want to present people’s lifestyles. I will try my best to achieve my goal.

Journalism is very important. People need to get news in real-time and for journalists, it is important to provide accurate information to the people as well. Especially at a time like this, we need to have a stronger information flow.
